Founders

About the Project

I wanted to build a solid framework for an online training program that celebrates and brings attention to the entrepreneurial community. Borrowing various tools and techniques from the field of UX design, I created a design brief to define the ‘look and feel’ of an online training program for new and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Who is this project for?

I developed the design brief for a fictional non-profit organization that I dreamed up in my head.

I named the organization Founders to recognize the ecosystem of Black business owners and Black-led non-profit organizations in Canada.

Design Process

Step 1: Know your audience

There are a handful of instructional design principles that are necessary for a project to be successful. For me, the most important principle of them all is knowing your audience.

To get to know my audience in technicolour detail, I developed personas and empathy maps in Xtensio by visualizing each potential learner as a ‘whole’ person rather than as a one-dimensional character in an online classroom.

This process inspired me to reflect on the challenges experienced by people with unique learning styles, challenges, and needs. It also inspired me to design a solution that would motivate them to reach their full potentials.

Step 2: Chart their journeys

I developed learner journey maps in Miro to jump right into the proverbial shoes of my target audience. This process allowed me to explore their innermost thoughts and feelings and identify the potential challenges they may encounter as they journey through the peaks and valleys of the program. My favourite part of the process was discovering opportunities to enhance the overall learning experience.

Step 3: Design their experience

I used Milanote to put the design brief together. Once I attached the last card to the board, I stepped back to take a 360-degree view of the final project.

I was delighted to see a board filled with images and cards that defined the scope of the online program and highlighted its essential design requirements. It also included rich and colourful details about its target learning audience.

At first, I didn’t notice the location of their names and backgrounds on the visual board. But now, after thinking about it for a while, I can’t imagine a better landing spot for the people at the centre of the program’s design than to be situated in the centre.
